RBI Chokes Speculative Rupee Bets With Forex Market Intervention

Times of India · business

The Reserve Bank of India has introduced measures to curb volatility against the rupee in the forex market. These include direct dollar sales to state-run oil companies for crude imports and a 20% cash reserve on banks for dollar purchases exceeding $2 million. Additionally, tightened rules on forex derivatives aim to prevent speculative positions and duplicate hedging. These actions follow a significant drop in India's foreign exchange reserves, influenced by rising crude oil prices, foreign investor outflows, and a stronger dollar globally.
