Florida Pythons Found Carrying Three New RNA Viruses

Times of India · science

Burmese pythons in Florida's Everglades have been found to carry three previously unknown RNA viruses, according to a study in the Journal of Virology. Researchers examined 40 pythons near a 2020 disease outbreak among eastern mudsnakes. While the ferlavirus linked to that outbreak was not found in the pythons, scientists identified an alphavirus, a hepacivirus, and an arterivirus. Further research is required to determine if these newly discovered viruses can infect native snake populations in the region. The findings expand the understanding of viruses present in invasive reptiles.
