IITs Had Unspoken Caste System in 80s

An IIT Madras alumnus revealed that the 1980s campus was highly caste-conscious, though not based on birth. Hierarchies were determined by JEE rank, branch of study, and GPA. Top rankers and Computer Science students were considered 'higher caste'. Those who achieved high GPAs through intense study were 'cash cows', while others were ranked lower. This system created significant mental pressure on students.

आईआईटी मद्रास के एक पूर्व छात्र ने बताया कि 1980 के दशक में कैंपस में जातिगत भेदभाव था, लेकिन यह जन्म पर आधारित नहीं था। छात्रों की हैसियत JEE रैंक, ब्रांच और GPA से तय होती थी। टॉप रैंकर्स और कंप्यूटर साइंस के छात्रों को 'ऊंची जाति' माना जाता था। जो छात्र कड़ी मेहनत से अच्छे GPA लाते थे, वे 'कैश काऊ' कहलाते थे, बाकी नीचे माने जाते थे। इस सिस्टम से छात्रों पर काफी मानसिक दबाव पड़ता था।
