Gurgaon's 80% Dug Wells Choked With Muck, Run Dry

Times of India · environment

A recent survey has revealed that 80% of traditional dug wells in Gurgaon are inactive, choked with silt and debris. Out of 321 wells documented across three blocks, 257 were found to be unusable. Pataudi block reported the highest proportion of inactive wells, with 84 out of 88 documented structures lying unused. Water experts suggest that reviving these neglected wells could help recharge groundwater, offering a decentralized solution for water security. The decline is attributed to a shift towards borewells, falling groundwater levels, and water quality concerns.
