India May Extend Duty-Free Cotton Imports Amid Output Drop

Business Standard · business

India is considering extending duty-free cotton imports for two more months until December due to a projected 12-18% fall in cotton production for the 2026-27 season. Output is estimated to be around 29 million bales, down from 33 million bales last season, primarily due to deficient rainfall and high temperatures. This move aims to reduce costs for textile mills and curb domestic prices. However, some traders argue it could harm farmers and that state-run firms hold sufficient stocks.
