Al Jazeera · world
Afghanistan's Panjshir valley is experiencing a boom in emerald mining, with nearly 3,000 carats sold at a recent auction, generating an estimated 400 million Afghanis ($6.12 million) this year. This trade is a vital resource for the war-torn country, employing over 15,000 people in the Panjshir mining sector alone. Despite attracting international buyers, including Chinese, Russian, and Iranian investors, the industry lacks modern processing machinery and standardized facilities. Governor of Panjshir province, Hafiz Muhammad Agha Hakim, highlighted the need for investment to process and standardize minerals locally before export.
