12,000 Evacuated in North Bengal After Glacial Lake Outburst Flood in Bhutan
Hindustan Times · environment
Approximately 12,000 people residing along the Sankosh River in West Bengal's Alipurduar district were relocated to safer areas on Friday. This precautionary measure was taken after a glacial lake outburst flood in Bhutan's Gasa region on Thursday evening caused a significant rise in the river's water level. The breach of Shintaphu Lake released about 7.4 million cubic metres of water, triggering flood alerts in parts of north Bengal and Assam. Emergency response teams have been deployed, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with Bhutanese officials.
