Europe's Supermarket Freezers Targeted By Cyberattacks, Damaging Food Supplies
Al Jazeera · world
Supermarket refrigerators and freezers across Europe have been targeted by a cyberattack that raised the temperature of internet-linked units, destroying large quantities of food. Over 100 shops in several European countries were affected on Monday, with hundreds of French supermarkets experiencing spoiled food and unit damage last month. The motive remains unclear, but authorities suspect a deliberate attempt to disrupt food supplies. Hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in remotely managed systems, including weak passwords, to increase appliance temperatures, sometimes causing melting or fires.
