Eurozone Banking Crisis Fears Resurface As Government Borrowing Costs Surge

Economic Times Markets · stocks

Fears of a repeat Eurozone sovereign debt crisis are resurfacing due to surging government borrowing costs, reminiscent of the crisis 15 years ago. While banks are better capitalized and supervised now, they remain vulnerable to deteriorating public finances and shifting investor sentiment. European banking stocks have fallen approximately 10% in six weeks, with French lenders dropping 17% amid concerns over France's large budget deficit and political uncertainty. Despite stronger capital buffers, a sustained decline in government bond prices could still pose risks.
