ICC Convicts CAR Ex-Rebel Leader of Crimes

The International Criminal Court has convicted Mahamat Said Abdel Kani, a former Central African Republic rebel commander, on four counts of crimes against humanity. Kani, 56, headed a feared prison unit in 2013 where political prisoners were subjected to torture, beatings, and maltreatment. He was acquitted of three war crimes charges. The ICC found he oversaw these atrocities, including personally participating in beatings. A sentence, potentially life imprisonment, will be decided later.
