Himalayan Migratory Freshwater Fish Disappearing Needs Urgent Attention

Mongabay India · environment

Migratory freshwater fish populations have seen an alarming global decline of 81% since the 1970s, with the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin identified as a critical migration landscape. River giants like the golden mahseer are disappearing due to climate change impacts and impassable hydropower dams, which fragment habitats and trap fish. This leads to inbreeding and genetic isolation, threatening the survival of these species. Local stewardship is proposed as a successful strategy to restore fish populations and support riverine livelihoods.
