Brazil President Bans Fixed-Odds Sports Betting

The Guardian · world

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has banned fixed-odds sports betting just over a week before presidential elections. This "hard, drastic and necessary measure" aims to combat widespread debt caused by gambling addiction. The ban prohibits new deposits and requires users to withdraw funds by October 5. The government also plans to criminalize activities like promoting betting. While polls suggest public support, a rival accused the president of an electoral tactic. The ban requires congressional approval within 120 days to remain in effect.
