MIT Researchers Fold Aluminium Into Room-Sized, Load-Bearing Structures

Times of India · science

MIT researchers have developed an origami-inspired construction method using flat aluminium panels to create lightweight, rigid structures capable of bearing loads without interior columns. The technique employs folded modular components to form complex structural shells, potentially making construction faster and more material-efficient. Lab simulations suggest these structures can be significantly stiffer than other origami techniques while using less material. This approach could be valuable for projects where conventional construction is difficult or expensive, offering a strong yet lighter alternative.
