Endangered Spoon-Billed Sandpiper, Tagged In Russia, Returns To Bengal Coast

Times of India · environment

A critically endangered spoon-billed sandpiper, identified by a lime-green leg tag, has been photographed on Bengal's Bakkhali coast. This individual was previously sighted in the same area earlier this year. The tag, marked "2K", helped confirm it was one of two spoon-billed sandpipers recorded in Bengal in 2026. Researchers traced the bird's journey of approximately 8,000 km from Russia's Chukotka region, where it was tagged. Its return to Bengal, rather than Russia, is likely to avoid conflict with established breeding pairs.
