A new report by the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc) highlights significant disparities in PhD candidate earnings across 26 European countries. The study, the first comprehensive overview of doctoral pay, analyzed starting remuneration in 2024-25, which can be received as salaries or scholarships. Denmark leads with a gross annual starting pay of €58,013.90, while Ukraine is at the bottom with €2,263.44 for 2026. These differences can contribute to a brain drain from lower-paying regions towards wealthier ones.
