The West Bengal government has prohibited newly appointed school teachers from directly participating in politics. This ban applies to future recruits and means they cannot contest elections for panchayat, municipal, assembly, or Lok Sabha positions. Existing teachers who are already elected representatives in local bodies will not be affected by this new rule. The state cabinet approved this initiative for prospective teachers in government-aided and sponsored schools. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that this aligns with practices in other Indian states.

पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार ने नए नियुक्त स्कूल शिक्षकों को सीधे राजनीति में भाग लेने से प्रतिबंधित कर दिया है। यह प्रतिबंध भविष्य के भर्तियों पर लागू होगा और इसका मतलब है कि वे पंचायत, नगरपालिका, विधानसभा या लोकसभा पदों के लिए चुनाव नहीं लड़ पाएंगे। स्थानीय निकायों में पहले से निर्वाचित प्रतिनिधि मौजूदा शिक्षकों पर यह नया नियम लागू नहीं होगा। राज्य मंत्रिमंडल ने सरकारी सहायता प्राप्त और प्रायोजित स्कूलों में भविष्य के शिक्षकों के लिए इस पहल को मंजूरी दी। मुख्यमंत्री सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने कहा कि यह अन्य भारतीय राज्यों की प्रथाओं के अनुरूप है।
