Two women with seemingly identical breast cancer diagnoses can receive vastly different treatments due to underlying tumour biology. Oncologists classify breast cancers based on specific markers like estrogen and progesterone receptors, and the HER2 protein. Tumours lacking these markers or with low recurrence risk may not require chemotherapy. Genomic tests can further assess chemotherapy benefit, while triple-negative cancers often necessitate it. Doctors also consider tumour stage, spread, and patient factors like age and health to tailor treatment plans.
