Banks Face Treasury Losses in Q2FY27 As Bond Yields Rise Sharply

Business Standard · stocks

Indian banks are bracing for significant treasury losses in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 due to a sharp increase in bond yields. The benchmark 10-year government bond yield has hardened by 42 basis points during the quarter. Additionally, the five-year bond yield has risen by 43 basis points, reaching 6.85 per cent. This hardening of yields negatively impacts the market value of existing bond portfolios held by banks, leading to potential accounting losses on their treasury operations.
