Silent Rickettsia Presence Found in 54% of Healthy ITBP Jawans
Times of India · science
A Zoological Survey of India study has detected molecular evidence of a spotted fever group-like Rickettsia in 54% of healthy Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel in Arunachal Pradesh. None of the affected individuals showed classical symptoms of infection, suggesting the pathogen can circulate silently. The findings raise concerns about undetected zoonotic transmission, as the jawans operate in rugged Himalayan terrain with potential exposure to animals and vectors. Scientists recommend further antibody testing and surveillance to understand the implications of these silent infections.
