Michigan Bans Untreated Firewood From January 2027 To Combat Pests
Times of India · environment
Michigan will ban untreated firewood entering the state from January 1, 2027, to prevent the spread of over 140 invasive pests and diseases. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced the quarantine, which applies to all firewood crossing state borders, including campers and businesses. Certified, heat-treated firewood will still be permitted. Officials emphasize that preventing introduction is more effective than managing infestations after they occur, citing past damage from insects like the emerald ash borer. Repeat offenders could face fines between $1,000 and $10,000 starting in 2028.
