Pune Launches Night Blood Tests To Detect Silent Filariasis Cases
Times of India · health
Pune health authorities have initiated a two-month night blood survey to detect lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis. The campaign, which began, focuses on construction and migrant workers, a high-risk population, collecting blood samples between 9 PM and midnight. This timing is crucial as microscopic parasites causing the disease are most active in the bloodstream then. The survey aims for early detection, especially given Pune's large migrant workforce coming from filariasis-prevalent states, to prevent potential local transmission and long-term disability.
