Guam's Brown Tree Snakes Caused Power Outages By Climbing Poles

Times of India · environment

Guam's invasive brown tree snakes have become a significant problem, not just for native wildlife but also for the island's electrical infrastructure. These excellent climbers exploit power poles and equipment, causing short circuits and costly blackouts. Researchers have documented over 1,600 snake-caused outages, with older estimates placing the annual economic impact at over $4.5 million. To combat this, scientists developed a unique method using acetaminophen-laced dead mice dropped from helicopters into the canopy to target the snakes.
