Supreme Court Allows Citizens To File Criminal Complaints Against Poll Candidates

TV9 Hindi · politics

The Supreme Court has ruled that any ordinary voter can now file a criminal complaint directly against electoral candidates for submitting false affidavits or hiding information. This decision bypasses the need for prior permission from the Election Commission or government officials. Such complaints can be filed under Section 125-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Previously, Section 195 of the CrPC restricted private individuals from filing such complaints without a public servant's involvement. This ruling empowers citizens to hold candidates accountable for electoral fraud.
