Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has warned of a looming global food crisis, citing potential disruptions in key maritime routes like the Hormuz Strait and Bab-el-Mandeb. She noted that while the Malacca Strait is currently unaffected, any disruption there would worsen the situation. To counter this, India is establishing a shipping emergency fund to assist fertilizer import lines facing high insurance premiums and limited shipping availability. The country is also increasing domestic urea and phosphate production, though this will take time. Sitharaman also mentioned progress in India-US trade deal talks.
