New Investor-Friendly Bilateral Treaty Framework Set For Cabinet Approval

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that a new template for bilateral investment treaties is ready and will soon receive Cabinet approval. This updated framework, developed over 18 months, aims to address shortcomings in the 2016 model and offer enhanced investor protection. India has continued negotiations using elements of this new template, even while finalising it. Recent agreements with Saudi Arabia and the UAE incorporate these sharper protections, with ongoing talks with Canada and Russia.
