In 2022, the world witnessed a staggering loss of approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food across households, food services, and retail markets, according to a UNEP report. This figure represents about 19% of the food available to consumers. Additionally, an estimated 13% of global food is lost from farm to shop. Households contribute the largest share of this waste, with an average individual discarding around 79 kilograms of food annually. While some countries have laws to curb food waste, they primarily focus on awareness rather than strict penalties.
