Bombay HC Quashes Govt Orders on Iron Ore Dumps Near Redi Port

Times of India · environment

The Bombay High Court's Kolhapur bench has annulled three Maharashtra government orders that allowed the removal of low-grade iron ore dumps from forest land near Redi Port. The court ruled that these permissions were granted without the mandatory prior approval from the Central government, as required by the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The land in question, spanning 33.78 hectares, was classified as forest land after plantations by the social forestry department. The court emphasized that any non-forest use of this land, including dump removal, necessitates central government clearance.
