People living away from home, even abroad, can perform Pitra Tarpan for the peace of their ancestors. According to Pandit Anupam Maharaj of Vindhyadham, simple rituals can be followed. If a priest is unavailable, one can offer water facing south after bathing, chanting the names of deceased parents and uttering 'Shri Vishnave Namah' thrice. Additionally, feeding a Brahmin for 15 days or on the specific tithi, and offering clothes, blankets, and footwear is recommended. Food should also be set aside for dogs, crows, and cows.
