Anupam Kher's first marriage to actress Madhumalti Kapoor reportedly lasted only a few days, according to his brother Raju Kher. The couple, who had been in a relationship for two to three years, decided to marry in a temple in Lucknow. However, Anupam left the marriage almost immediately after the ceremony, returning to Shimla and then Delhi. Raju Kher mentioned that the family was unaware of the marriage at the time and that Anupam was considered 'seedha' for his era, while Madhumalti was a stronger personality.

अनुपम खेर के भाई राजू खेर के मुताबिक, अनुपम खेर की अभिनेत्री मधुमांती कपूर से पहली शादी सिर्फ कुछ दिनों तक ही चली थी। दो-तीन साल से रिश्ते में रहे इस जोड़े ने लखनऊ के एक मंदिर में शादी करने का फैसला किया था। हालांकि, अनुपम ने समारोह के तुरंत बाद शादी छोड़ दी और शिमला, फिर दिल्ली लौट गए। राजू खेर ने बताया कि उस समय परिवार को शादी के बारे में पता नहीं था और अनुपम को उनके दौर के हिसाब से 'सीधा' माना जाता था, जबकि मधुमांती एक मजबूत व्यक्तित्व की मालकिन थीं।
