India's Climbers Compete in Japan's Asian Games

Joga Purty and Deepu Mallesh are representing India in sport climbing at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Both athletes train under the Tata Sports Academy network in Jamshedpur, as part of an initiative to boost India's climbing program. Sport climbing, though niche in India, has existed since the 1990s, with India first participating in the Asiad in 2018. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation governs the sport, which has roots in mountaineering and is gaining attention for its Olympic potential.
