Florida Pier Wreckage Becomes Underwater Habitat
Times of India · environment
Wreckage from Florida's historic Naples Pier, damaged by Hurricane Ian, has been transformed into an underwater habitat. Fifty-nine concrete pilings, weighing over 300 tons, were deployed at Wasmer Reef, approximately 10 miles offshore. This initiative repurposes materials from the pier, originally built in 1888, which suffered significant damage in September 2022. The deployed pilings will now support marine life and expand an existing artificial reef system. This project aims to create new habitats for marine organisms and bolster the Gulf of Mexico's underwater ecosystem.
