Ancient Armoured Amphibian Fossil Found In China Challenges Evolution Theories

Times of India · science

A newly discovered fossil from China, dating back approximately 237 million years, suggests the existence of the first amphibian to have lived entirely at sea. Named Gerrothorax maritimus, the armoured creature measured about 2.4 feet long and possessed a flattened, disc-shaped body. Researchers examined two near-complete skeletons found in Guizhou Province, an area once submerged. This finding challenges long-held scientific understanding of amphibian evolution, as most amphibians have permeable skin unsuitable for saltwater. Gerrothorax maritimus may have overcome this through its bony armour, limiting water and salt exchange.
