Murray River Habitat Restoration Triples Murray Cod, Doubles Golden Perch Populations
Times of India · environment
Restoring woody habitat in Australia's Murray River has significantly boosted native fish populations over seven years. Researchers reintroduced 4,450 pieces of timber across 110 km of the river, leading to a threefold increase in Murray cod and a doubling of golden perch density. These native species had previously declined due to habitat loss. The study, published in Ecological Applications, monitored fish populations using various tracking methods to compare restored and unrestored sections. This initiative highlights the effectiveness of habitat restoration in revitalizing aquatic ecosystems.
