Govt Allows Charges on UPI Payments Over ₹2,000

The Indian government has notified new rules allowing merchant discount rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. Amendments to the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, permit banks and system providers to impose charges on payments above this threshold. This move follows a period of zero MDR to boost digital payment adoption. The National Payments Corporation of India will now decide the specific MDR framework and rates for these transactions.

सरकार ने ₹2,000 से ज़्यादा के UPI ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर मर्चेंट डिस्काउंट रेट (MDR) लगाने के नए नियम जारी कर दिए हैं। पेमेंट एंड सेटलमेंट सिस्टम्स एक्ट, 2007 में बदलाव के बाद, बैंक और सिस्टम प्रोवाइडर इस सीमा से ऊपर के पेमेंट्स पर शुल्क लगा सकते हैं। डिजिटल पेमेंट को बढ़ावा देने के लिए पहले MDR शून्य था। अब नेशनल पेमेंट्स कॉर्पोरेशन ऑफ इंडिया इन ट्रांज़ैक्शन के लिए MDR की दरें तय करेगा।
