India's E-Waste Surge: Recycling Efforts Rise Amidst Growing Challenges
Hindustan Times · environment
India is facing a rapidly escalating e-waste crisis, with generation more than doubling since 2017-18 to over 14 lakh metric tonnes annually. While formal collection and processing have significantly improved to around 70%, this recycling focus alone is insufficient. The surge is driven by increased digitisation, changing consumption patterns favouring frequent upgrades, and shorter product lifecycles due to difficult repairs and non-removable batteries. The upcoming wave of electric vehicle and renewable energy components, particularly lithium-ion batteries, presents new complexities beyond conventional e-waste management.
