Ujjain's Ancient History: From Mauryan Capital To Literary Hub

Hindustan Times · interesting

Ujjain, recently in the news for a demolition, boasts a rich and ancient history. It served as a capital for the Mauryan empire and the Malwa sultanate, and was a significant center for classical literature, including works by Kalidasa. Archaeological evidence suggests human habitation around Ujjain dates back four thousand years. By the 6th century BCE, it was the capital of the Avanti Mahajanapada and later became a crucial transit hub for trade, known to Greeks as Ozene.
