August Hanning, the former head of Germany's foreign intelligence service (BND), has been arrested on charges of espionage and treason. Prosecutors allege that Hanning, who led the BND from 1998 to 2005, received nearly 2,000 classified documents from his former chief-of-staff, Manfred D. These documents, some highly sensitive, were allegedly passed to Hanning in exchange for money. Investigators believe Hanning then used this information in his private consultancy business and may have leaked classified details to a foreign intelligence service.
