Assam Villages Convert Grazing Land to Forest Reserve To Protect Deer
The Better India · lifestyle
Four villages in Assam's Dhemaji district are transforming 1,044 bighas of grazing land into a village forest reserve. This initiative aims to provide a safer habitat for approximately 150 hog deer, which share the land with cattle and buffaloes. The villagers, who depend on this land for their livelihoods, are taking responsibility for wildlife protection. The project, supported by the Dhemaji district administration and Forest Department, also includes plans for structured ecotourism. Community efforts like voluntary labor and sapling plantation have already begun.
