World's Largest Underground Lake Found In Namibia

The world's largest non-subglacial underground lake, known as Dragon's Breath Cave, is located beneath the Kalahari Desert in Namibia. Discovered in 1986, this extraordinary natural wonder lies within karst formations in the Otjozondjupa region, approximately 46 kilometers northwest of Grootfontein. The lake, with a surface area of about 2 hectares, was named for the humid air rising from its opening, which resembles a dragon's breath. This unique environment supports rare aquatic species, including the blind Golden Cave Catfish.
