Chinese police have dismantled a drug-trafficking network involving a retired chemistry professor and a man with a master's degree. The gang is accused of producing chemicals for etomidate, a controlled narcotic misused in "zombie vapes." The operation spanned China, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, with 71 arrests and seizure of 73kg of etomidate. The investigation began in 2024 after unusual chemical purchases were flagged. The professor allegedly designed the manufacturing process, using factory spaces across five cities for ostensibly developing new medicines.
