Centre Considers Panel to Review UGC's Equity Rules Amid SC Challenge

The Centre informed the Supreme Court it is considering forming a committee to review the UGC 2026 regulations on preventing caste discrimination in higher education. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated the government aims to ensure no student group feels excluded or apprehensive. The Supreme Court had previously put the regulations on hold and suggested the government reconsider the framework. The challenge primarily concerns the exclusion of general category students from the grievance redressal mechanism, which petitioners argue is discriminatory.
