Roman Coffin In Westminster Abbey Holds Medieval Abbot, Not Roman
Times of India - India · india
New research suggests a skeleton found in a Roman sarcophagus at Westminster Abbey belongs to a medieval abbot, not the Roman man named on its inscription. The limestone coffin, originally from the fourth century and inscribed for Valerius Amandinus, features a later Christian cross, indicating reuse. Excavated in 1869, its contents were re-examined in 2016, revealing an almost complete skeleton. Radiocarbon dating placed the remains between AD 987 and 1052, confirming a medieval burial. Analysis indicates the man was around 35-49 years old and about 5 feet 9 inches tall.
