Budhi Diwali Celebrated Weeks After National Diwali In Himachal, Uttarakhand

Hindustan Times · lifestyle

In parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, a unique festival called Budhi Diwali, or "Old Diwali," is celebrated weeks after the rest of India. This tradition, also known as Igas Bagwal in Uttarakhand, has roots in local folklore and farming practices. Two main explanations exist for the delayed celebration: the news of Lord Rama's return taking time to reach remote villages, and the need for communities to finish their harvest season before celebrating. Celebrations involve traditional rituals, folk dances, bonfires, and local cuisine, keeping ancient customs alive.
