Morocco's Intelligence Agency Accused of Using Spyware to Silence Journalists

Al Jazeera · world

Amnesty International has accused Morocco's domestic intelligence service (DGST) of unlawfully surveilling journalists and human rights defenders using spyware, hidden microphones, and pre-infected phones. The NGO's report details how the DGST allegedly deployed Pegasus spyware between 2017 and 2021, targeting activists, journalists, and political figures. This surveillance apparatus is reportedly used to silence critical voices, with personal data then used for public smear campaigns. Morocco has repeatedly denied using spyware against its citizens.
