French Protesters Use 'Bismillah, C'est Les Ténèbres' Chant To Mock Police Stereotyping

French students protesting educational conditions and the cost of living have adopted the chant 'Bismillah, c’est les ténèbres' as a rallying cry. The phrase, combining Arabic and French slang, translates to 'In the name of God, it’s the darkness.' Students claim it mocks undercover police attempting to infiltrate their online chats with unconvincing slang. This slogan has become a symbol of perceived racial stereotyping and the disconnect between authorities and young people. Hundreds of thousands participated in nationwide demonstrations over the weekend.
