First Genetic Study Unveils Kodava Origins In New Book

A new book titled ‘Who are the Kodavas (Coorgs)?’ by PT Bopanna reveals the origins of the Kodava community through the first comprehensive genetic study. Led by Professor Buttiyanda Kuttapa Thelma, the research analyzed genomic signatures to map genetic affinities with other populations. The study identified three distinct subgroups within the Kodavas, highlighting their complex population history. Sociologist Prof. Neravanda Veena Poonacha emphasizes that Kodava identity evolved dynamically through centuries of interactions, not solely through genetics.
