RBI's Rupee Protection Measures Drive Dollar Hedging to 8-Month Low

Business Standard · business

Indian companies have reduced their purchases of forward dollars, used to hedge against rupee depreciation, to an eight-month low. This decline of 35% in October, to $49.5 billion, follows Reserve Bank of India measures aimed at curbing speculative bets against the currency. These steps, including a foreign-exchange risk reserve, have made building dollar positions more expensive, easing pressure on the rupee. Despite these interventions, underlying demand for dollars remains high, with importers' average monthly purchases increasing significantly this year.
