Polio Persists in Pakistan and Afghanistan Amidst Global Eradication Efforts

Times of India · health

Despite global progress, polio remains a concern in Pakistan and Afghanistan, with 48 cases reported this year compared to 52 last year. Afghanistan has seen a surge with 42 cases in 2026, while Pakistan reported six, down from 31. Insecurity, restricted access, and mistrust hinder vaccination efforts in both nations. Failure to eradicate polio could lead to 200,000 new global cases annually within a decade, as the virus has already been detected in environmental samples and even in Germany.
