Kerala Govt Scraps Bakery's Horti-Wine Licence, Transfers Excise Officer

Hindustan Times · politics

Kerala's excise minister M Liju has revoked a licence granted to a Thrissur bakery to sell 'horti-wine', an alcoholic beverage made from local fruits with 15.5% alcohol content. The minister also transferred the excise official who issued the order, CK Anil Kumar, stating that while the licence was technically permissible under previous government rules, it should not have been granted as the current administration was finalising its liquor policy. The previous LDF government had amended rules in 2022 to encourage fruit-based wine production, aiming to boost farmer earnings.
