BJP MLA Walks Out Over Vande Mataram Stanzas

Shivamogga BJP MLA S.N. Channabasappa walked out of a government programme on Tuesday, September 15, protesting the rendition of only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram. The Karnataka government had issued an order to sing only these stanzas at state functions. The MLA insisted on the full song, stating he would not participate in a program where the national song was shortened. Other leaders present criticized his walkout as an insult to democracy.

शिवमोगा के बीजेपी विधायक एस.एन. चन्नबसप्पा मंगलवार को एक सरकारी कार्यक्रम से वॉकआउट कर गए। उन्होंने वंदे मातरम के सिर्फ़ दो बंद गाने पर आपत्ति जताई। कर्नाटक सरकार ने आदेश दिया था कि सरकारी कार्यक्रमों में सिर्फ़ यही दो बंद गाए जाएं। विधायक ने पूरा गाना गाने पर ज़ोर दिया और कहा कि वे ऐसे कार्यक्रम में शामिल नहीं होंगे जहाँ राष्ट्रगान छोटा किया जाए। वहाँ मौजूद दूसरे नेताओं ने उनके इस कदम को लोकतंत्र का अपमान बताया।
